Hi, I'm Eleanor Roosevelt. I was born on Oct. 11, 1884 in New York
City. My uncle was the very famous president Theodore Roosevelt also
known as Teddy. My parents were Anna and Elliot. Mom died when I was
eight years old. Dad died two years later and I went to live with my
grandmother. At age 15 I went to England to attend and all girls school
called Allens Wood. That is when I developed confidence and began to
believe in myself. At age 18 I moved back to New York and became a
teacher. On March 17, 1905, I married my distant cousin Franklin Deleno
Roosevelt. We had six children: five boys and a girl. I loved to help
people and volunteered for the red Cross. In 1921 Franklin got polio
and I would go to meetings in his place. In 1928 Franklin was elected
governor of New York. In 1932 Franklin was elected president and I
became first lady. As first lady I continued to help people any way
I could.
I even served as a delegate for the U.N. In 1945 Franklin died while
still president. Finally on Nov. 7, 1962, I died in New York. |

Hello, my name is Helen Keller. I was blinded when I was six months
old. A sickness came upon me that made me blind and deaf. When I was
only five, my parents hired a sign language teacher who taught me sign
language even though I didn't know what the signs meant. But in 1887,
the same year that the teacher came, she taught me my first sign language
word, water. This is how she did it. She lead me over to a water pump,
turned the water on so I could feel the water. Then she spelled water
into my hand. Then I got to know a lot of other things, too. In 1888,
I went to Perkins School which is when the sign language teacher came.
I wondered who she was, where she came from? She said her name was
Annie Sullivan. Helen studied there and became the first deaf and blind
person
to get a bachelors degree. I worked with Franklin Roosevelt after I
graduated from Radcliffe College. But during that time, Annie died,
so we hired
a new teacher. Her name was Polly. She taught me new stuff, too. But
two years later she died. And two years after that, I died. |
